In a way the lower resolution is always going to make the image 'worse' so using lossy compression to make the textures 'worse' means you get a game that looks AMAZING on the switch and you don't even notice its inferior until you hold the switch screen up next to the same game running on a PS4 pro at 4K. So its entirely possible you can use lossy compression on 4k assets and not even notice because you are looking at those assets on a 720p screen. But your 4K or even 1080P game is not running on a 4K display anymore, its running on the switch at 720 in mobile or 1080 on the big screen. Games made for modern consoles have these assets made for either 4K or 1080P depending on the console that was targeted. In this case the nintendo switch is the headphones and the big speaker is a 4K tv screen. Think back on the stereo example from before. Does that mean the game will automatically look worse? The answer can* be no. Now lets assume a developer DOES try lossy compression so they can fit all the art assets on a switch cart. Those AAA devs where probably trying to max out the CPU's available on modern consoles to achieve fancy effects that help market the game. This situation is a lot more likely for indy titles than a AAA title being ported from PS4/XBONE to switch. Alternatively, if your game isn't CPU bound and has processor cycles to spare then you can just go ahead and decompress in realtime. A smart game developer would try to do all this stuff during loading screens so decompression isn't happening during gameplay. or physics calculations so that you can decompress some music or textures. So now you have to take some processor time away from A.I. Usually this 'something' is the processor. However, something has to decompress the data before it can be used. So if you compressed your art assets with lossless compression, the idea is that you won't notice any drop in quality. flac Remember that speaker example cause it will come in handy later. WAV file or a lossless compressed file like. For songs played on headphones, you mostly won't notice a difference because it was mostly bass/subsonic frequencies that where cut out, but on a big stereo speaker that you are standing in front of you would notice that your heart wasn't thumping as much with the mp3 version compared to an uncompressed. A good example of this is MP3 files, which achieve very small file sizes by cutting out the audio that is supposedly beyond the ability of a human to hear. This is a bigger question than you may have realized.įirst off, as some already noted, there are two main types of compression: lossless and lossy compression.
